Telepathy

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

i saw her in the crowd
Where (our) words were not allowed
Strictly forbidden by the priests
 enforced by the authorities

Converging softly as in a whisper
i sensed her aura warmly glowing
As i drew nearer (And so, i kissed her)
 It must have been telepathy

Sensing growing warmth
Within our hearts and minds
Our hearts began to merge,
Our worlds to intertwine

Taken by surprise
Such fiery passions grew
Before we'd ever realized
The spirit carried through
 It must have been telepathy

And so, a bond was formed
Although our separate paths
Seemed seldom to allow
But few brief interludes
(Still the spirit grows)

To a voyager, a dreamer
A wayfarer, too long alone
In flight along a quiet stream,
Meditatively returning home
 It must have been telepathy

Embracing tenderly, as if
From another space in time
For a moment of eternity,
Such harmony between us
dwelt within our minds

We soon became infused
Sifting thru the traces for a clue
To this mystery,
In a slow-motion ballet of changing moods
 It must have been telepathy

A disturbance heard across the room,
Materialized without warning
i offered No resistance
For it was i they'd chosen to pursue,

For crimes they'd claimed,
though not explained
For harboring beliefs disruptive
To the order of the day,
Mockingly they laughed,
for that you'll dearly pay

Bound and tried, the charges were read
Guarded by rouges and louts
Saying "you'd better off be dead"

False testimonies and bribes,
Accusations, written statements
All without foundation in truth
Is justice only blind?

Brought in chains before the crowd
Harassed, severely beaten,
tired and abused
With no lawyer to defend
a course in life

Seeing with understanding
Somehow beyond acceptance
Or so they'd claim
(And so, the trial ensued)

Blasphemy, the gathering crowd agrees,
The case is clear the judgment,
so severe

People thirst for an example
For the young are so impressionable
these days

They say, He should be crucified
(Bells are rung)

i felt her presence in the crowd
In solemn contemplation
as the hour drew near
A tempest began to build

of deathly silence
Foretelling doom

A tortured calm, teary eyes
A broken heart, a patient dream
Imaginings, fading fast

Then strong and clear a voice is felt
(Rather than heard)

By a hidden source
(gentle loving words)

i'd not otherwise had known

Revelations pouring endlessly
Her spirit flows... My aura glows
The world grows dim
At last, i see the one who knows

 It must have been Telepathy
