Lion and Fox

Free roaming with head held high,
Ferocious heart that overcomes it’s prey,
Facing foes with mentality that defy,
Fearless against any that seeks fray,
Fighting relentlessly against all within path.

Silent stance that’s sneaks without detection,
Skulking amongst shadows blending to survive,
Self-poised mannerism while approaching with circumspection,
Startled easily but not to deprive,
Sharp senses outwit any set trap.

Barrel of gun with target set,
Pack of wolves surround his family,
Proud Lion hasn’t crossed this threat,
Blindsided with no mercy or amnesty,
Both could use each others strengths.

Unknown scent warning to take heed,
Ethereal instinctive abruptness in forward motion,
Deafening shot hitting mane that impede,
Unusually retreating backward like a craven,
Hunters ambush failed chasing after trophy.

Bark and scream to counter howls,
Fox cubs cry in-between their parents,
Enclosing from every direction came growls,
Snarling teeth can already taste infants,
Believing they have no way out.

Arcing back keeping line of sight,
Leading the way with full knowing,
Hunter becoming hunted gaining weighted fright,
Mother, cubs first down burrow housing,
Protective nose to nose with wolf.

About this poem

"The lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognise traps, and a lion to frighten wolves." - Niccolo Machiavelli.
