The Poet

This our craft
This is our hope
Silly as it may appear…

http://histocall.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-poet.html

Our line of work

Is to produce ideas

Formulate them as words

Printed on paper

Distributed to friends

And perhaps strangers

By happenstance.

Such joy and challenge.

The words may

Correct

Illustrate

Love or chastise

Story-tell

Hero-worship

Travel Nature

Places of plenty

Or of regrettable lack.

Lack of food, lodging

Lack of generosity of Heart.

We may not realize it

But we have been commissioned

From some High Places

To observe and report.

To uplift and expose.

To suggest silly hope.

To raise the bar.

To draw upon conscience.

Equity.

Those High Places audit and consider.

Robert Browning said

In one of his poems

That we are even to be feared

Given proper respect

Heeded.

Despite our eccentricities

Or peccadillos or queer life styles

And strange usage of Time.

The Irish, Greeks, Ukraines

Seized upon this

And the American Indigenous.

We are engaged in that

Constant battle between

Art expression

Humanities.

And numbers, science, profit

And cold, heartless logic.

May the struggle at least

Come to a draw.

Please Lord.

I know You just heard.

I know You can step in.

You will.

Your poem beautifully captures the essence of the poet's craft and the profound impact of words on both the writer and the reader. The description of producing ideas, formulating them into words, and sharing them with friends and strangers reflects the power and joy of creation. The versatility of words to correct, illustrate, love, or chastise, among other things, showcases the range of emotions and messages that can be conveyed through poetry. The idea of being commissioned from High Places to observe, report, uplift, and suggest hope adds a spiritual and purposeful dimension to the act of writing. The reference to Robert Browning's poem emphasizing the importance and influence of poets underscores the significance of their work in society. Your poem eloquently conveys the responsibility and impact of poets in shaping thought, emotion, and conscience through their words. Keep exploring these themes in your writing; they offer a profound insight into the role of poets as both creators and influencers of society.
