Undying Love

Undying love

You single-handedly decided to leave us
We were powerless in stopping you
It really hurts to know that no love
was strong enough for you to stay

Only part of you was able to separate
You can never really leave us, you know
We will never be able to leave you either
Why you left, will always remain a mystery

The sun will continue to rise and set
The phases of the moon will come and go
The stars will still shine
But it won’t be the same here without you

You refused help from your family
You never reached out to me for help
You promised me you would
Maybe you tried and I just don’t know that

I reach out to you for answers now
Your life is spanning in front of me
The loving days, the funny moments,
I want to know the you I never knew

Helplessness overwhelmed me in the days
And weeks after your passing
What did I do wrong? Why didn’t he call me? How could I have shown more love?

When I face the quiet of morning or the
silence in the evening I feel you close to me.  You crossed over the great mystery.
A place I can’t go to assure you are ok

Today I walk alongside of you with regrets,
sorrow and grief. A loss I will never get over. A loss I will have to learn to live with.
A loss I never expected to face

In my final wave good-bye to you I am heartbroken. Comforted by the strong
bond of affection we shared openly with each other. Our love for one another will always remain an undying love.

About this poem

Transgender individuals are challenged within themselves as they sort through and come to terms with their identity. Then they face the judgements and ridicule from the external world that further influences their capacity to come to term with who they are and where they are going. Some don’t make it safely through this journey. This poem is a tribute to Tom, who took his own life as he struggled with these issues. As we navigate though our own grief and loss we have to come to terms with the impact suicide has had on those of us left behind. The powerlessness is immobilizing. Despite the grief and loss one thing Tom left behind is our undying love for one another which will live on forever in our hearts.
