New land

My room is empty, my lamp burns
two gray olive lamps are hidden within my closet, the wicks are there too
baroque readings curated
islands, new lands, the paradise found, Indians priests organizing fertility for please the gods, Spanish language slowly lands
knights dressing flare and sash
Indians bring bucklers
and the struggle to survive
pyramids to remember they lived for sacrifice, we live for work,
rattlesnakes carved over the boards everybody accepts
the gods are gone, the emperor is dead
a new dawn begins
ahead is the arch, the noble city, the cathedral is embellished, convents are full of women in search of knowledge
a nun will write romance
another poet write about Solitude, then he departs
a bench awaits for two strangers to admire succulents
big night stalk the cougar
battles lost and won
walls witnessing the fall
corn harvested to feed poor, governors,
the plants of corn so incredible surging from the springs were the gods hid the wisdom from men
Ancient stones I thought you were submerged, the shells and marine snails tell the epic without formed glyphs
a new language for a new land violently started

I took AP U.S history and AP World history back in Highschool and I enjoyed them a lot. This poem took me back to the skills those classes taught me by looking at history critically and being able to think dispassionately. It made me view world events and history itself with a more clinical lens, perhaps why I major in political science in college now; however, this poem also reminded me about an important skill I need to still develop if I want to continue improving my poetry: the ability to see the full spectrum of nuance behind human existence. I loved this poem for its attention to the intimate details. The detail that the history books glazed over, the "feelings" of the people that actually existed during those times. Perhaps many years from now a historian may look at one of our poems to better understand how we felt about existing within our own time periods.

Your poem made me think a lot about why I think writing poetry is not just important for my personal growth but for my academic growth as well. Really well written, the imagery is truly brought to life and jumps right off my screen and into my mind. Keep writing!
