Pawns

Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)

I've seen it all before,
These leaders
We admire,
Reflections
Of our own flaws,
But what's behind
Those closed doors?
Exploitation,
Manipulation,
A power trip
Of domination,
No empathy
Or connection,
Just a cold sense
Of satisfaction.
Rulers and followers,
Two worlds apart,
The latter
Viewed as objects,
Their worth measured
In heartless charts.
We must acknowledge
This reality,
And not fall
For the fallacy,
That those in control
Are benevolent,
And our trust in them
Is our salvation.
In the end,
We're all just pawns,
In their game
Of power and con,
Until we wake up
And unite,
We'll forever
Be under
Their thumb.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…

I have a poem on my site that tries to express to same way of thinking "I Was Just a Pawn". We are all the same in the end.
