Whose Face Is This?

Jeffrey Powell 1979 (Pittsburgh, PA)

May 23

I want to remember you
the same way you used to be.
But what’s frightening and scary
is soon you won't know me.

The person you’re becoming
is a husk of who you were.
What’s worse is I can't tell if
you're seeing it occur.

Will you regret your grudges
as your brain becomes swiss cheese?
Even bad times destined to
become lost memories.

Do you still know I love you
as the darkness closes in?
After all you’re still breathing,
still smile now and again.

I think that you’re yet in there
with such confusion abound.
You must be screaming inside
as this nightmare confounds.

“Whose face is this I see now?”
–you’re wondering to yourself,
“Patch me back into more than
undeciphered intel!”

Or maybe your conscience is
dying too –despite your might.
Lord, I cannot stand to watch
you stripped of all your light!

Alzheimer’s or dementia
whichever, I'm just not sure,
But one thing that is certain:
you’re standing at death’s door!

A bit of an introvert, Jeffrey enjoys using words and poetry as an outlet for expressing his thoughts and feelings. He tends to play by his own rules and darts in and out of the civilized world, as avoiding the conventional gathering is more his style. Jeffrey lives with his fraternal twin whom he enjoys sharing a laugh with at the opportune time. more…
