Summer Serenity

Susan Campbell 1968 (Alabama)

Another day ends.
And the summer night is falling.
I take my repose
On the front porch swing that's calling.

The warm breezes make
The scent of honeysuckle rise.
The yard is awash
With the twinkling of fireflies.

Katydids and tree frogs
Start to sing their evening chorus.
Their songs echo loudly.
From the dark, lonely forest.

The moon is full and bright.
And reflecting upon the lake.
I hear the gentle sounds
Of the lapping waves as they break.

I close my eyes and breathe
In the peace and serenity,
For it's only here that I
Regain my hope and sanity.

About this poem

Summer is my favorite season. I love sitting on the front porch and listening to the tree frogs, katydids, and cicadas, and watching the fireflies light up the front yard in the evening. This poem is my attempt to capture the feeling and experience of summer evenings in the south.
