When in the year it's summertime,
And my two eyes the flowers see,
I think of days when at my prime.
The way I looked with youth and glee.

When in the year it summer is,
And the birds are singing their sweet song,
I see those times I thought me some bliss:
Sweet voice, bright eyes, no need of care.

When in the year summer is come,
And the sun shines in all its best,
I think of me, what I've become,
Old, ugly, tired, and need of rest.

Chorus:
So, let me sing my truthful song
When every summertime is here,
And think of when me young and strong,
And how all of that has disappeared.
