A Nightshades Song

Winter rains lover
the cold north wind
fought against the thought of warmth
in which we would embrace again.

It holds steadfast to the slow
beating of the window pane
drums loudly out thoughts
leaving us numb.

Ice courses through veins
long forgotten canals
whom once held court for promises
of love stricken stars
that fell from above.

Silence is left shouting
deaf tones of moments
long held to endless night
shade which we decided to get drunk on
and parade
through the death streets of our ancestors
dancing dreams
with them forever on...
...movements to the song.

About this poem

This poem is part of a series of poems I wrote while being involuntarily committed in a mental health facility. It is inspired by lost love, old dreams that die, followed by a search for new purpose.

Joseph George

I grew up on a farm in Alabama, went to school in a small town. Married, had a successful career in software engineering, had two daughters. Ended up on a mental health journey that found me divorced, rebuilding my relationships with my daughters, being involuntarily committed to a state mental health facility for 1.7 years, and still working my way through the process from a group home setting. I have new purpose, and new focus, and my mental illness does not define who I am. more…
