Sleepless Night

Charles Edward York 1966 (Saigon, Vietnam)

Sleepless Night

Oh, sleepless night you’ve found me
And here so unannounced
Surprising my senses
Taking away sweet slumber
And all desires to close my eyes
Filling me with frivolous thoughts
And all manner of distractions
Save for one seductive,
Soothing line in verse
And off we go again!

You are so eager to silently express
Life in so many mysteries
Opening blossoms
Unraveling riddles and rhymes
Metaphors by another name
Emotions and thoughts
Transforming affections
Into something one can savor
Your delectable morsels
Not for me to consume but write!

So here we go oh sleepless night
I labor to your beck and call
You with your nocturne
Summoning me to play
An invisible phrase
A undiscovered stanza
Palpitating poetry
Penning its way across
My mind onto a page
So your world is read out loud!
