Homogenized
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
Homogenized.
Uniformed in a culture structured.
With a sameness unthreatened.
As an adaptation to a standard of acceptance,
Grows more tolerant...
If unnoticeably blended,
Into a texture mixed without emphasis.
Yet...
This quilt stitched to observe its diversity,
Is among many images...
To see them witnessed.
And...
Has been the reality that conflicts,
With the truth.
A truth fictioned to delude,
The vibrant colors of the attached fabric.
Obviously created to represent unification.
However...
To insist with resistance,
That once one's focus remains...
On the whiteness of it,
The appearance of black anywhere...
Diminishes in significance.
And can be ultimately ignored permanently.
For bringing the attention to a quilt,
Homogenized as the basis to a culture.
Strengthened by entitlements.
Leadership and power to rule.
Although less attractive,
And absent of flavor without ethnic diversity!
'Meaning what?'
'Chaos, confusion and division.
With blame to claim, allegations to make.
Crime to rise and mental illness denied.
Only until they've run out of excuses,
For the creating of their own dilemmas.'
'That is not a fair assessment, at all.'
'I know.
People everywhere,
Have begun to protest the evidence of facts.
While disbelieving that the black folks....
Did not create the economic epidemic.'
'What?'
'I apologize.
I thought you wanted to discuss,
Fair assessments!'
