Heartbeat of a Budding Spring

Savannah Grace Jenkins 2003 (South Carolina)

In Spring, I sit beneath the sun
And drink the golden juice
That drips so gloriously from the heav’ns
Onto the craving buds of my tongue.

I laugh with the breeze
That softly tickles the chins
Of the violets, that sleep in blessed
Harmony. They dream of aged dandis
That fly away on breathy sighs
On the wings of the wind as a wish
Away they go, across the glades
Of emerald green, and farther still
Until they reach that place
Where ribboned hills reach out to meet
And touch the plains of baby blue.

I sing the line of a dreamer’s tune.
I hear the start of a melody,
Again and again revived in the earth.

Hushed are the crystal winter’s cry
Hushed are the icy atmospheres.

And now, from drowsy months awakes
A heart that slowly comes to life,
In orchestrated symphonies.
It beckons forth the virgin chorus
Of a budding Spring.
