A Thirsty Recipe
My brain is the cocktail
I am the bartender
My body is the man who sits at the bar
He asks for something to make him less sad
I say sure, I’d be glad
Let me whip up a glass
I mix up something special
Two parts Dopamine, one part Serotonin and a wink
I give it to the man
He takes a drink
He says, “I do not like this I think”
I look at him with dismay
“How could I fix this?” I say
He says, “Don’t get me wrong, it tastes like a sunshine ray.”
“But maybe there is something to make the pain go away?”
I understand now
A heartbreak exists
A problem that is not so easily fixed
I know what to do
I know just the thing
Let’s make a drink that is a bit more daring
I start to construct a new concoction
With a pinch of Oxytocin
And a dash of Antitoxin
I slide him the glass
He downs it in one pass
Looks up and down
Then his face gains a frown
He says, “Thank you my friend, that surely was delicious.”
“But perhaps we can try something a little more vicious?”
I look at the man, he surely is getting suspicious
But I can’t refuse
He pays well for all his booze
Let’s make a drink that he will satisfy his muse
So I get to work
And with a spin
Pull out my finest bottle of Adrenaline
I know this will do the trick
Let’s make it super thick
And twirl around the little stir stick
I hand the man his cocktail
I look in his eyes
A twinkle of something that can not be disguised
I stare in horror
“What have I done!”
This is a man who has surely come undone
He takes one gulp
And walks out the door
My only hope is that he does not come back for more
About this poem
A interesting dichotomy that I came up with to show the average reader into the neuroscience of brain chemicals and how they effect us.
