Bette

Eileen Goldberg 1950 (Brooklyn)

     Missed that train to Cali,
      never saw the Silicon Valley.
Never sat in the desert neath
      a sky full of stars
      smoking blunts fatter than
       a Cuban cigar.
But we swam in a pond
with some ducks and a swan
      in an old Berkshire town
      name of Becket.
      Friendship kept growing
      between us, both knowing
      that this was much more
      than it seemed.
      Years passed us quickly,
       we loved every one.
      We never expected to
      this one we’d come.
I’m blessed to still see you,
      though our visits are few.
Thank God you still know me,
       remember my face.
I’ll be with you always, no
      matter the place….

About this poem

Life is beautiful, but there are cruelties as well. I never understand why good people suffer them. This poem is dedicated to a woman who’s artistry was beyond compare and whose friendship was a gift.
