Christmas vs. Time

Children know it's almost time for,
Santa Claus, Rudolph, Frosty, and more;
They see all the ads on T.V. for this and that,
Barbie, Ninja Turtles, a walking puppy, or a ball and bat.

The lists have all been made and Santa letters sent out,
Maybe a few weeks--chores will be done without a pout.
Waiting is all there is left to do,
For kids waiting is worse than the flu.

It's time now--Santa has come and gone,
The kids, to excited for sleep, are all up at dawn;
Mom, Dad, come see, Santa's been here,
So many presents, "Which is mine?" is the united cheer.

The gifts are opened, paper thrown here and there,
Cars, trucks, dolls, games, books, and a big stuffed teddy bear;
Clean up the mess, fix a big breakfast, and the kids go play,
They'll be busy and as good as gold the rest of the day.

Now that it's over, we can put the kids to bed,
Time to relax, put your feet up, next round is 364 days ahead.

About this poem

My son was 10 or 11, getting almost too big for "Santa". He wasn't asking all the questions he had asked every December, since he could talk clearly, about Christmas. I decided I would write something he could read for himself, and came up with this one day as a tribute to all curious children who were trying to figure out, "What gives"?

Rosanne M. Mayes

I started, and continued for many years, to write poems about life in general, just for my own enjoyment of putting the words down on paper. After a lot of poems had stacked up one day, I sat down and read them all. When I finished, I said to myself, "That didn't sound too bad." "I wonder if they could be published." So, I got online and found a publisher, contacted them, and they were interested in seeing what I had. And here I am today, entering a contest! more…
