Chaotic Passenger

The Chaotic passenger is by my side
Whispering his desires as they rise
I look him squarely in his eyes
Where a familiar glare resides
I dismiss most of his concerns
Yet his insistent chatter returns
That reminds me of days long past
Encouraging me to think & act fast
He obsesses over all of the things I’ve done
The good the bad and the forgotten ones
He pretends about things that aren’t real
It takes all of my will to stay even keel
When I entertain his delusional game
I’m quickly thrown and reminded he’s insane
He dreams about a future where he is king
In his next breath he fears being beaten in a ring
He teeters between grandeur and despair
Often leaves me wondering with nothing to compare
He yells out more commands to my dismay
All of the things that need tending to today
Lists and lists of activities to come
Worried about how they will ever be done
I can’t take much more of this
I look over and he still persists
I finally pull over and ask him to get out
That's when I realize I’m alone on my couch

    Dear Anthony,
I want you to know that over several months this thoughtful poem of yours has caused much reflection on my part to the point of my writing a ‘responsive poem’ on poetry.com entitled “The Divided Self in Sync.” The subject is one that has for centuries occupied very thoughtful minds of different disciplines seeking therapeutic outcomes to resolve the issue of humankind divided in himself. Thank you for contributing to stirring the inquisitive mind.

Alone on the couch one body entombed. Nearby, a partner fully groomed. Each gifted innately with an autonomous mind. Each seeking friendship, and to be kind. Each no longer looking askance and behind. Each now ready to celebrate their new find: How the two as one unified mind can now be aligned.

Not just making a comment, but trying to steal the "poet"s thunder by mimicking his effort? Not that it is worthy of note or mimic, but hey, that's where we are.

Love this! So true, we often are our worst enemy. Love the humorous ending. Today, as it crosses my mind, I will smile every time. :)

Great descriptions and rhymes. We all have our own chaotic passengers riding along with us. Thank you for calling yours out, weakening mine by bringing yours into the light.
