My Fairytale

I lost my love today,
I fell out of my fairytale.
No longer do I wish to sing,
No more do I wish to fail.

Nothing I do is good enough.
My head is thick
But I’m not very tough.
The thought of failure makes me sick.

Do I really want to do this?
I’m not so sure anymore
It seems everything I used to love
Is torn away from me.

Perfectionism is a horrible curse
Never am I satisfied
I’m not good enough at anything
My love has finally died.

I always saw this coming
And have always dreaded the day
I feel so empty knowing
That now nothing will be okay.

The things I used to cling to
Now make me want to cry.
I hate this hate toward singing,
So, I’ll just say:

“Good-bye.”

About this poem

This poem was written during my senior year, I was going through a lot of self-discovery following my heart and choosing a career path in the world of Opera as a singing actress. This excitement led to setting some unrealistic bars for achievement while simultaneously being fueled only by a bunch of hot air and self-doubt. I felt super frustrated and angry with myself. I was dealing silently with trauma, as well.

I am an opera singer who loves literature and dabbling in poetry writing that follows no particular rules; instead I like to let my imagination and emotional state set the mood but the try to allow the music of the words themselves to create the lines. more…
