UP UP AND AWAY

Melody moved to a house across town
I remember, about seven months ago
We have one of the small communities
Where everyone you see you know.

She told the children she had a balloon
Which could carry her far away
Their parents told them to avoid her
That her mind had gone astray.

The town lay beneath an old dam
Built ever so many years before
It held high water once too often
And just couldn't hold anymore.

It rained the entire week before
But just in time out came the sun
It was the annual whole town picnic
Everyone showed up for the fun.

Suddenly the old dam gave way
A wall of water, rushing toward town
People scurried in all directions
Trying to get to higher ground.

Little Joey, playing 'Huck Finn'
On that once so peaceful stream
Everyone had gotten to safety
When they heard little Joeys scream.

Suddenly dropping out of the clouds
Came a giant, colored, big air balloon
A ladder was dropped, Joey grabbed on
They all say not a second to soon.

Now Melody is the local hero
And everyone wants it known
About her beautiful big air balloon
And the first day it had flown....

About this poem

emember as a child looking up and seeing several beautiful, big, air balloons. I wrote this as a tribute to those care-free spirits making the skies even prettier...
