When God came for Dad

Ruth Kamasungua 1966 (Kundiawa)

The night air
Gripped me
Like an old man’s
Frail and pitiful arm

This heart
Cracked and bled
Within
Refused to heal

I’ve walked this road
Before
Only now
My feet refused
To take a step forward

My spirit slumped
And fainted
Like a suit
Slipping off its hanger

Oh God,
How can I walk
This path
When he is not here
But with You?

Remember,
How he ushered me here?
Soon after I took my first breath?

And introduced me to his
People
Who forgot him
As he slipped in and out
Of the eternal gate

I was alone
Holding his hand
And praying
That You might give him
Back to me

But You took him
To Your eternal home
To be with You
Forever

About this poem

I wrote this poem when my dad passed away. I thought God would allow him to live some more years with me. I loved my dad very much. I was shocked and miserable. I wrote this poem after I realized that, he is never coming back.
