Water

Milka Bachman 1972 (Santa Clara)

Your universe is dark and I am looking for a spark.
As Moses taps his staff upon the desert rock
your manna falls upon my currents
where sand and ice share the intent
and the wanderer's voice seems more content
to speak of demons than to fight them.

In this world -which mocks the kindest soul,
and breaks us out of habit and delight-
we have fought our battles well.

Respect the work but know
there is much in each of us we must unlearn.

Perhaps, I someday too will be as Moses' rock
and in breaking, become a stream of life
within your desert.
