Dancing with Darkness

Shall we dance to the music of your heart?
Listen now, quiet down, take a step, take a bow.
Before we go fix your face, find your grace, and go on.
Smile pretty so they can't see everything wrong with you and me.

They'll watch as we spin, as we twirl, as we jump, as we whirl around and around on the empty stage.
They’ll glower at your beauty, when you smile down and look around at all their faces.
But only I will know how empty and lost you truly are.

Shall we whisper to them, our secrets that we keep?
The painted on faces, the tear stained cheeks, the silent sobs you release backstage.

Come child, come with me now as the music quiets down, as it slows, as it goes, as it stops.
Let us resume our life as one, as we have always done, just you and me.

Shall we?

About this poem

This poem reflects how I remember feeling in my younger years dealing with depression. Feeling like I had to hide how I was feeling, and feeling like Depression was a whole entity attached to me.
