Not Easy To Bend

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

A maverick change maker.
And not quick or easy to bend.
Fixed,
I am told to be.

I pick and choose what it is I like.

I can not be given anything.
I neither can use nor want to keep.
Without it being asked,
What it is I need.

No one can give me anything.
To expect it I will not refuse.
I do have options.
I know I can pick from and choose.

Living to pick,
From my own list of options.
Did not happen overnight.
Time it took,
For me to become aware...
What was right to live my life.

And...
No one else is going to add,
On my list of options...
What it is they wish,
For me to choose and pick.

Since my door to open wide and quick,
I will do to be done.
Without a thought about it.

'You are not easy to bend.'

'Why should I live my life,
Competing with others.
In a contest to see,
Who has the ability to win?
The choices I make,
Are my own to begin.
Until I determine,
When they change to end.

And...
Here.
See for yourself.
Nowhere on my list of wants and wishes,
Do you appear as an option to pick!'

'That's not a very nice thing to say!'

'I agree.
I chose not to go with my first choice.'

'Which was?'

'To slowly walk to that door.
Open it.
Then give you a warm loving hug.
Before I asked you to leave.
Then slammed the door behind you,
As hard and loud as I could.
But I thought that message to send,
You would misunderstand the reason for it!'
