Goldilocks

George Cook 1934 (Lanarkshire)

Hi! My name is Goldilocks,
I go in the wood for walks
One day I did find a house
And I thought that it was grouse
When I knocked no one replied
So I just stepped on inside
I was hungry, looked around
Just to see what could be found
On the table I could see
Bowls of porridge, one, two, three
Porridge hot and porridge cold
Porridge just right to behold
From the third one I did sup
Until it was all ate up
Now to ease my aching feet
I would need to find a seat
In the lounge room I did pick
One of three to do the trick
One and two, too big at best,
In the third one I would rest
But when I sat my bum in it,
It broke up bit by bit
Now I had to find a bed
Where to lay my sleepy head
To the bedroom I did wend
Where some seconds I did spend
Laying down on each of three
Till I found one right for me
On the third, so it seems
I fell into the land of dreams
When I opened up my eyes
There to me was some surprise
The owners now were standing close
Angry, shocked, and verbose
Now I thought I’d better run
After everything I’d done
So up I jumped and, post-haste
Far into the wood I raced

George Cook

I was born, grew up, and worked in Scotland. I got married in July 1960 and migrated to Australia in 1965 under the then Assisted Passage Migration Scheme. For nine years in Scotland, 1956 to 1965, I worked for a large photographic company which also operated in Australia. I worked there until 1994 when I took early retirement. By this time the children had all grown up it gave my wife and I the chance to think about going ‘back home’ to visit relatives and relations. We did in fact have three visits 1998, 1999 and 2000. My wife and I shared our lives and times together for the rest of 58 years and four months when, sadly, my wife passed away in hospital. more…
