Guide Your Heart

Fear grips the heart and threatens to never let go
Dancing shadows move to the beat of a different drum
They sweep us off our feet and carry us away to a foreign land
The mind wanders to places it shouldn't go
Imploring eyes see playful visions of a time-lost memory
We cherish the imitation to perish thoughts of an impending reality
Footsteps echo in a chamber not far from here
The pursuer is never the one being followed there
Fleeting memories leave wistful trails for wishful thinkers
And wishful thinkers place high hopes in the hands of strangers

We are who we want to become
To be something we already were is to throw ourselves into the void
A memory will only present itself to the highest bidder
Any moments we spend together are priceless
The person who outbids love has everything they could have ever hoped for
but not a single other person to share it with
Eyes can only find what they are looking for
Look for nothing, and that is what you'll discover
So just assign your heart to be your guide
And let fear become nothing but a distant memory

About this poem

The past doesn't come to haunt us. It just lies in wait.
