THE COT ON THE HILL

Ruby Yvette Jenkins 1898 (United States) – 1992 (United States)

I walked to Grandpa's house today. Oh, how my heart did thrill!
To see that house so far away, the Cot Upon the Hill.

And when I came into the place where ran the old, old stair,
I missed a long-lost smiling face, I missed her silv'ry hair.

And then again in that warm nook, yes, missing from his chair,
Was one who loved to read his book. No, grandpa was not there.

I went into the kitchen then, but knew before I looked,
That dear Aunt Ida was not there where she had always cooked.

Where she had toiled day after day, and stilled our childish woes;
How much I love her memory, The Father only knows.

But I awoke, 'twas all a dream. In memory I see
The dear old Cot upon the Hill
That once did shelter me.
