Believer
keshia short 1989 (Bc)
Believe
Hi there sister, how are you?
Me? I’m fine
Just sitting here waiting..trying not to cry.
And If I’m being honest
I’m just waiting on my perfect opportunity to finally die
But how can you possibly say you’re waiting to die?
Well, you mean to tell me
This is all that it is
No need to question why?
So we just pay bills. File taxes
And let society suck us dry?
But what do you mean though
It makes sense
To pay the man
Until you cry
They say it’s the steps
We need to take
To conform
And step in line
But what if we want a special life
That doesn’t fit
Their “normal” design?
Well you better get yourself ready
To be written off
As one with an unsound mind.
So you’re saying
If I step up
And go against the “normal flow”
Failure is where I’m destined
And below is where I’ll go?
Well, yeah… it’s what they say
So we must listen
And obey
For if you step outside these rules
It’s hell you’re going to pay.
But what if hell isn’t real to me
What if I told you
I don’t believe in Jesus?
Well I’m sure
Everyone would laugh at you
Because we’ve already convinced
The masses to believe us
So if I stand up
And step out
And say your beliefs are all wrong
What we’ve been fed since birth
Has been corrupt all along?
You can say what you like
But no matter how you spin this
We’ve already polluted a million minds
Because religion is our business
We will continue to take the minds
Of every sheep birthed to our congregation
Pollute, poison, and persuade
The thoughtless drones of our nation
So even if you have a say
And believe the church isn’t true
We’ve already convinced
Those millions of minds
To gang the f*ck up on you.
And if you challenge
Our social norms
And what we have to say
We will make your life
A living hell
Until your judgement day
Judgement day you say?
Is that my ultimate threat?
Is it not the content of my character
That “god” isn’t supposed to forget?
Is it not
Though shalt not lie, nor cheat, nor steal
But though shalt turn a blind eye
To the coveted pervert to cop a feel?
And though shalt harbour
Complete ignorance and hate
Towards any individual
Who has a same sex mate?
What about though shalt learn
To understand those born a physical female
But in any other aspect of life
Identify as a male
Does this not bring us over
To loving thy neighbor?
To accept and to understand
And to help carry the labour
Of extinguishing the fires
Lit from learned behavior of ignorant nature?
Though shalt we not kill
The happiness and freedoms
Of those practicing free love and free will?
For what business is it of ours
To pass absurd laws on maritals
Weirdly obsessing
Over who has what gentials
And why is no one talking about
The pressure on these young ladies
To have their entire life solved at 20
To marry and pop out babies
And what about the weight we throw
On these young men’s unstable shoulders
To find a wife, make a life
Settle down and wait to get older
I’m not sure what your problem is?
This is the ideal life
Settle young, reproduce
Repent your pain and strife
This is the perfect way
If you simply obey
Jesus will take the reigns,
And guide your way
Just sign his name
Every Sunday
on that personal cheque
fold it tight,
pray with your mite
and drop your donation on the plate
for in this church
its not your soul that determines your role
it’s the size of you’re cheque book at the pearly gates.
