Toxic

She was just a quiet girl, lost in a bad place;
In an adult's world, despite her young age,
Making his thoughts swirl and fill with rage,
Cos she's his girl - or that's what he says…

Cos to be honest with you he's a disgrace,
He's constantly rude - she doesn't feel safe
But where can she go - with him on her case;
She doesn't know - that's why she stays…

Then one day she finally had enough
She waited so long, but now she packed her stuff
While the guy tried to call her bluff
But she stayed strong; she'd had enough…

She walked out leaving behind the negativity
To search for her true identity;
No longer in the shadow of his toxicity,
A life of wonder for her in a strange city…

She moved to a place she did not know,
Got depressed, and was at an all-time low...
But pretended she was fine; the tears didn't flow,
Despite hours by the mirror waiting for them to show…

But deep down she knew there was a reason behind her hurt;
That she was unique from the start;
Cos she loved the guy with all her heart,
But he never understood what that was worth…

But it's too late; he can't even say sorry,
But she doesn't hate, and tells him not to worry,
Because she's lost her anxiety, has no need to hurry;
She is finally ready; to truly be free.

About this poem

The poem tells the story of a quiet, shy girl, who fell in love with a man who turned out not to be as charming as he had first appeared to be. The girl's natural beauty combined with her shy demeanour aroused extreme jealousy in the man. His possessive nature scared the “quiet girl/but where can she go - with him on her case; she doesn’t know.” However, behind the girl's quiet appearance is a hidden strength that went unnoticed by the man. He “tried to call her bluff/but she stayed strong; she’d had enough…”. It is clear that the man didn’t really know this girl he claimed to love, completely overlooking her strong personality. The girl shows a rare inner strength in leaving behind all that she knew; appeared to be comfortable with doing this. She didn’t look back, but moved to a “strange city…/a place she did not know.” But she persevered without shedding any tears,”despite hours by the mirror waiting for them to show…”. One would expect the girl to hate this man for his horrible

Sebastian Kurek

My name is Sebastian Kurek, and I am an 18 year old student in the Dungarvan CBS, due to sit my Leaving Certificate Examinations in June. To be honest with you, I don't really know when exactly I got interested in poetry as such. I remember throughout my Junior Certificate Course, I hated it! I found all the poems we had to study boring and pointless. Little did I know that a little over 2 years later, I would be writing my own poems and songs; quite a turnaround, isn't it? more…
