War

Bernadette Sannoh 1978 (Freetown)

Like a tiny potent spark
It ignites into an inferno
At home level it's from a crack
Through which the serpent enters into.

Strong nations rage and gather in packs
Threats made with military displays
Which scatter families in the parks
Causing children to go astray.

Peaceful nations urgently call for a talk
Trying to see if they can reach a pact
But the feuding nations can't be pacified with a talk
The antagonist left with an agenda to launch an attack.

At twilight, the sound of a bomb
Sends the whole city in disarray
Old, young, women, children, on the run
The cries of the wounded is heard far away

War comes to us swiftly
And turns our land into a fallow
A once admired, beautiful city
Now lives in ruins with many in sorrow.

Can war be stopped?
If pride cease and egos leashed
If the powerful nations can be stopped
And yes, He above can make wars to cease!

About this poem

Thinking about the war in Ukraine inspired me to write this poem. It makes me think of the way strong nations can just declare war on 'weak' nations, because they feel they're powerful. In the poem I asked the question, Can war be stopped? The answer is for all of us.
