What happens

J.Y. 1992 (Michigan)

In my life, I like certainties because they provide comfort like a warm blanket
For better or for worse, I enjoy the static facts
I will live
I will love
I will laugh
Finally, I will grow old and die
Now what happens in middle of all of this varies like x
There is one thing that frightens me like no other
Ignorance, an ignorance like no other
I feel something but it is not bliss
Something that wakes me in a sweat and short of breath, a fear!
My Mom has always told me to not ask questions that I did not want the answer to
Mom, I need to know! I have to know!
Heaven, Hell or other
Assuredly, I could lean on the belief of a being that allegedly is the initiator of all this
Too many questions I have to go on faith
And I am not too certain I would see the pearly gates
That's that but the idea of nothing is equally incompatible
Not when I observed all that I do
In nature
In the universe
I do not know where science and the spirit meet
Certainly, they mingle in some respect right?
The end, I think about it or rather it finds me
It asks questions to make me worry and fret
The day doesn't really matter, not really
I imagine I will be naturally devastated to leave the ones I love with this void of my presence
Like a sinkhole to take my physical, audio, visual and intangible form to never be seen again
Only in memories, trapped to be replayed and reviewed
No, I do not know what happens
However, I refuse to be held hostage by this captor of a concept
In my time alive, I have handled a lot and I will handle more
Death will come like the end of your favorite sitcom
Some ends closed and others incomplete
The credits will run one last time
As long as I can look back and happy with the work
I will be happy

About this poem

In my adult life, the idea of death seems to pervade my thoughts... What happens after? Does this life mean anything if we just pass on into the next one? What if there isn't a next one? A truly crushing hypothesis
