Loves Madness

Dearest ______

This is a letter born of madness.  A madness fueled by the fire of Unrequited Love. You must know that I love you? All my efforts to the contrary have been an exercise in futility! I have loved you from the first moment I saw you. The first moment I looked into your eyes the first time I saw you smile; I was smitten, knocked to my knees and fighting for my soul ever since.

What Kind Of love is this that binds a man's heart to a dream?  What kind of dream haunts him in the night only to wake and find his dream walking in the daylight?  What kind of day,  full of sunlight and the songs of birds and all the beauty of nature; seems gray and lifeless without you as it's sunrise and it's sunset. It is a day a night and a dream of the bittersweet madness of loving you.

You must surely think me mad to have not expressed this in a more productive manner, but you must understand the true nature of my madness.  Even if you loved me madly I could not accept your love. This Is insanity, I cannot love you, yet I cannot not love you, Madness!  I  would explain further but then you too might go mad.

Being thusly enlightened of my current malady you must now prepare for what is undoubtedly the most maddening thing in  all of this; it appears that you are my only cure. Madness!

You must come to me. You must come to me in the midst of all the madness, all the wonder and fear beauty and passion of all that is love.  For one moment in time,  you must allow me to love you. You must allow me to share with you all the madness and all the joy and yes,  some of the pain of loving you. It is the only way I will ever be free.

So come to me my love, come and heal me. Come and put me out of my misery.  I shall try to be brief qnd you must try to be strong. It is not easy to be loved, it can be as difficult or more than my loving you! But fear not dear lady my love means you know harm. But, if fear is what gets you through the madness then be strong and if you must be cruel, cut my heart out if you must, take my life, do whatever you must, do anything but love me in return, for that would truly be madness.

Come to me sweet lady, be merciful and free me.

It is a maddening joy to love.

   I always shall.

About this poem

I wrote this poem back in my hopeless romantic days. I had been reading to much Keats and Byron and found myself falling hopelessly in love with my muse.
