Mother

We chased your identity
when all your name was lost;
we searched in every niche and cranny,
no matter what the cost.

It seemed you were not born to man
though God knew of your birth;
your spirit ruled where flesh was banned
and thence will always be your mirth.

In searching for your personality,
your roots I did endeavour:
the truth the Lord had said to me
My son here is your mother!

About this poem

My mother in law applied for a visa to go to the United Kingdom but discovered that there was no record of her in the computer system. I joined her in a search for any document that could verify her identity and we finally had to go to the department of internal affairs where her name and date of birth was changed. It reminded me of the time when Jesus spoke to his earthly mother and his disciple John and vindicated the relationship between mother and son although they were not related by blood.
