Step

I just need one more.

Just another step.
To escape to you.

From the coldness of the dark
and into your warming embrace.

I have already trudged through thorns
with bleeding gashes on my body.

I think I can make it.
I just don’t want to lose you.

But here I stand waiting to make the choice.
Step towards you or step back away.

I’m here again at this decision.
I have one chance but I’m hesitant.

You won’t wait forever.
You won’t stay until I’m ready.

Can’t you understand if I come to you,
all that I will bring is despair.

If I leave this home of mine.
Guilt will engulf me. If I leave.

Can I find happiness
along this road that you also walk on?

Will I find what I’m looking for at the end
of the path I was forced to walk?

Or will I find it
walking side by side with you?

And because I wasn’t strong enough.
Because I couldn’t face my fears.

I took the step back.
And watched you walk away from me.
