I Keep

This breeze that I can no longer share with you.
What do I do with myself?
My mind keeps straying from the path.
From the purpose of this journey.

I’m trying to find the missing piece to me.
But I keep seeing you.

This dirt road that marked our childhood.
The trees that stood so tall
through our child eyes.
It still seems too far to reach.

Every time I stop to look at the changes.
I keep hearing you call my name like the old days.

With my hands in my pocket.
I keep walking trying to leave behind us.
Still, my head turns back to stare.
Us innocently playing.

Oblivious of the world we lived in.
I keep remembering the pain that drove you away.

My thoughts scattered all about.
Like that of the delicate autumn leaves.
Crunching underneath my shoes,
I shatter every memory trying to forget.

The sea of grass we ran across.
I keep seeing the dandelion seeds fly.

Flocks of birds above our heads
searching for their homes.
Just like us trying to find ourselves.
Not knowing what we were looking for then.

And even now I don’t know what to search for.
I keep failing to find myself.
