On being a Poet

I’m not a poet and darned if I know it
My vocabulary is dreadfully ordinary
I hate to read
I do concede
Words don’t come easily
And often spawn cheesily.

Not to be contentious
But I find some poems pretentious
Words I don’t understand
Trying so hard to sound grand
Acrostic, Pantoum, Kyrielle, Tetractys
What in the heck is all this?!

Despite being contrarious
Of poets I’m still envious
Perhaps some day I’ll be a wordsmith
And the words will flow forthwith
Until then I’ll write from the heart
And I think that’s a good start.

About this poem

I have a love/hate relationship with poetry. I want to love it and be a part of it.
