OUT OF THE DARKENED NIGHT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Out of the darkened night
Sinister creatures do await,
Doomed late-night travellers
About to meet their dire fate.

Malignant evil corrupting
Everything within this town,
Things that fly throughout the air
And noxious creatures on the ground.

Predators unknown to science
Shrilling as they hunt down prey,
In the awful blood-soaked night
Where even the moon is a ghastly grey.

Huntsmen, axemen, woodsmen too
Creeping through the horrid night,
Hoping to make another killing
Before the coming of daylight.

Out of the darkened night
Crawling malignant horrors,
Which to science are unknown
Surely evolution's great errors?

Nefarious figures creeping
Through the verdant forestland,
Just outside of the haunted town
Overgrown twisted foliage stands.

Malformed creatures of the night
Hunting through the wicked streets,
Stunted abomination crouching
Ready to attack anything they meet.

Out of the darkened night
Loathsome animals carouse,
Watching every step you make
Hoping to follow into your house.
