A King’s Shout

Warbard 1967 (Los Angeles)

Hear me peasants, on what’s to be,
None for you and all for me,
Pay for chopping my trees with axes,
Less on food and more on taxes!

Tithes and offerings, you may give,
But on debts and owing, you will live,
You yell for money, you be so bold,
For I have no problems living on your gold!

You will work the fields to tend my crops,
And till I’m pleased, you will not stop,
For to feed my soldiers, you must prepare,
And what little is left, you all may share.

Don’t plea to me for a decent meal,
If you want so bad, go out and steal,
But work you will, for a king has needs,
For as a generous man, I don’t tax your seeds.

But give me problems, give me strife,
Then I, your King, will tax your life,
So all you peasants, hear my shout,
For a King’s way is what it’s all about!
