TOWN OF NO RETURN

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

There's a town where no-one goes by choice
And where no-one ever leaves,
A town of broken promises
Where every resident grieves.

Grieves for the better times
Before they were stranded here,
Before their lives were hopeless
Before their hearts were filled with fear.

Erstwhile dreams have been replaced
By hideous, torrid nightmares,
And when you look for promised joys
You find there's nothing there.

A red sandy desert surrounds
This loathsome ancient outpost,
A place where only losers live
And no-one would ever choose to go.

Scorching desert sands interchange
With overgrown mutant foliage,
Verdant growths that surely must be
Left over from some prehistoric age.

Evil creature creep about
Just out of human sight,
Hiding from the light of day
Lurching through the awful night.

Gargoyles and insectile beings
Hippogriffs and malformed beasts,
All come out of cover at night
Hoping for a human feast.

The town of no return
Will not give up those who dwell,
Although they often try to leave
From this awful lonesome Hell.
