Stepping Across

I anxiously wait to begin,
shivers over my whole body.
My fate may depend on this.
I must decide wisely.
The first step is critical,
and must be cautious and true.
There could be many obstacles,
but if I watch and listen carefully,
I should survive.
I proceed cautiously, constantly
scanning for pending disasters.
As I am halfway to success,
a previously unseen problem.
I narrowly escape, but survive.
It makes my heart skip a beat.
After, what seems like hours,
it’s time for the final step.
My body and soul fill
with pleasure and satisfaction.
I have done it, I am finished.
My normal breathing resumes.
For the first time in my life,
I have crossed the street alone.
