BIG SISTER IS WATCHING OVER YOU

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

In today's modern society
Even your thinking is done for you,
There's nothing you have to worry about
Just do what you're told to do.

Big Sister must always be obeyed
She knows more than you or I,
So if you ever step out of line
She slanders you with evil lies.

There is no room for rebels
Those who just will not conform,
"We only want the cabbages
Those who fit the norm."

Remember, you never have to think
"Big Sister will think for you",
So slow your thinking process down
Originality will never do!

Free-thinkers aren't allowed now
Big Sister can do your thinking,
So shut your mouth, don't complain
And dull yourself with drinking:

For alcohol numbs your senses
So you don't see what's going on,
The Matriarch is ruling now
All freedom is long gone.

Protestors cannot be allowed
Or he who thinks for himself,
So I guess I'm a lone dinosaur
Left abandoned on the shelf.

We're told that women are always right
And, of course, men are always wrong,
They call this system equality
But true equality is long gone.

So shut down your brain and do
What Big Sister tells you to do,
Keep your head good and empty
And she'll do your thinking for you.

About this poem

In his masterwork George Orwell only got three things wrong: He set it in America, when it actually happened in Australia first. He set it in 1984, when it was going at least a decade before that. He called his tyrant Big Brother, when it's actually Big Sister and her man-bashing sexism who is the real villain(ess)!
