DON'T LET IT IN

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Something dreadful knocks
Upon your door late at night,
Please, don't let it in.

Like in vampire tales
It can't enter your house,
Unless you let it in.

Beware of night whistling
It might be just the wind,
Or something outside.

Something foul and strange
Lurks outside your dwelling,
Hoping soon to come in.

Tap, tap, tapping
Hoping to make you open up,
And invite it in.

Eerily at night
You hear a sweet voice calling,
Just outside the house.

Outside day or night
Always be on the alert,
Never let it in.

Sometimes in the night
When the telephone rings,
A voice says, "Let me in".

A quiet, strange voice
Like a lullaby,
A lullaby of madness.

Alone or in company
When the gentle voice pleads,
Don't let it in!
