Analysis of The Lady's decision

"Heavens! What am I going to wear?"
(Where’s that shaving gear?)
"Do you think I’d be better in this red one, or the green?"
(You are, of course, quite gorgeous in whatever you are seen.)

"But you’re just saying that. You’re not even looking."
Oh yes I am. (Damn, a bloody nick). Just remember, you don’t have to do the cooking
Tonight. And I won’t have to do the washing up.
Where we shall sup.

"But I have to know: will this make me look nice?"
To me you always look nice, my dear.
"You always say that. Really?"
Of course my love. Are you ready?

"No, just a minute. Lipstick."
I love your lipstick, it makes
You look like Elizabeth Taylor.
"Oh you brute, you’re teasing me, no, no, no, not now. Oh. Oh, please don't do that, please
It's too nice..."

Lindsay George Hall

British born and brought up, classically educated.Apart from the Greek and Latin Classics, my special enthusiasms are English and German romantic poetry, but also (outwith that loop) the spare New Englander Emily Dickinson and Gerard Manley Hopkins. My own stuff here is largely 'retro', but I make no apology for that. Poetry, to be poetry, needs discipline.I am happy to review (or preview) poems by request (lindsayxix@gmail.com). more…
