Analysis of Only a Heart Could Know

I found my heart in a thousand pieces.
Cold, torn and shattered by
A stone, harder than steel is.
I heard my heart cry,
Why should it ask, why should it try?
When loving hurts me so.
What made love close its eyes and die
Only a heart could know.

Depart I said, for if love chooses
To spread its wings and fly;
Depart, for the door to my heart closes
And I within its walls must lie.
Must I with false love's wish comply?
Can true love ever start to grow?
What was this flame that drew us nigh?
Only a heart could know.

The charm of a love lost still embraces
A heart that has reasoned why.
And though but a kind word eases
The pain that my heart lives by,
No longer plead your love will I,
Nor past emotion show,
Where have tears gone, now eyes are dry?
Only a heart could know.

I watch the melting clouds drift by
And wonder where they go
Was love as empty as the cloudless sky?
Only a heart could know.

Barbara Cadogan

I am a Registered Nurse, and first started to write poetry when I was about 18 years old. I have written several poems on a variety of subjects, and enjoy poems that are light and filled with humor. I feel that a good poem like a painting, is able to evoke a variety of emotions, whether sad or cheerful, angry or sympathetic. My goal in life is to learn as much as I can, and to spread peace and good cheer to many. Above all, to be respectful and helpful to my fellow man. more…
