Analysis of On A Grassy Sidewalk
One late-late night in August,
Many, many summers ago--
On a grassy sidewalk,
I willingly laid to rest,
An old trundle bed and lumpy pillow.
And--from nowhere, an old man appeared
And claimed them his own, saying--
"These will end my many nights spent
In spread-out newsprint and plastic--
On a grassy sidewalk near Lafayette...."
...one early morning in May--
On a grassy sidewalk,
I woefully laid to rest,
An old but comfortable
"Beautyrest." And--there, it laid
For many days--waiting for "an old man, or
A garbage truck." And--too, for many days,
I found myself misty, seeing it lying
There...that I got to thinking...
How it served me well--over the years.
