Analysis of Curtain Down

Constant reminders
of past times together
are everywhere
and so I am left here
among the remains
of a tragic playhouse theatre
where once they put on
a romantic comedy
in which she and I
enjoyed top billing

We accepted our bouquet's
during many curtain calls
during that first flush
night after
incredible night
during those times
when the chemistry
worked so well
so as to touch
the watching galley
to tears
of sheer joy

alas the run ended
and now the scene
is that of silence
and chewed ticket stubs
between empty seats
that were
so recently occupied
by a delighted audience
of devoted patrons

My leading lady
has lost her way
from the stage door
and took flight
into the either
with a suitor
who I feel is indeed
quite unsuitable
and so I am here alone
reading the soggy pages
of our final reviews

I now wish the house lights
to be switched off
to allow me
to bemoan her loss
and reflect
on how great
we once were
together on our
opening night

Dave Ratcliffe

Some of my imagery may seem a little on the dark side at times but I feel the pain of the chastened and broken among my close family and friends. I write from the heart to express my innermost thoughts through song lyrics and poetry. I try always, ‘to be true to my philosophy of understanding tolerance, to share my perceptions and desires with integrity’. I have just finished my first play which was both a challenging and rewarding experience, which I intend to follow up on. I enjoy reading poetry from all over the world. Poetry.com is a great platform for me to network with other like-minded people and showcase my own work for others to be moved and inspired. After all this is the duty of a poet…I have just had my first poetry book published with the Title Scratching the Page and my thanks go to Michael Dobson for producing it and to all those who read it more…
