Demon

Demon

My hand
starts to tremble
on reaching the handle
for what lies in wait
could destroy me this night
with great trepidation
I hold up a candle
and try to prepare
for a terrible fright

This house
holds the answers
to what I am seeking
and will not reveal
so I must now explore
the audible clues
from boards that are creaking
to noises I heard
behind this door

My fate
takes the hand
of my demon in waiting
while slowly I shuffle
and enter the room
immersed in my thoughts
in the world I'm creating
while rats scurry round
in the chill and the gloom

The evil inside
is beyond comprehension
a sight that my eyes
never dreamed they would see
for I didn't know that
it was my intention
to stare in the face
of the demon
that's me

Dave Ratcliffe

Some of my imagery may seem a little on the dark side at times but I feel the pain of the chastened and broken among my close family and friends. I write from the heart to express my innermost thoughts through song lyrics and poetry. I try always, ‘to be true to my philosophy of understanding tolerance, to share my perceptions and desires with integrity’. I have just finished my first play which was both a challenging and rewarding experience, which I intend to follow up on. I enjoy reading poetry from all over the world. Poetry.com is a great platform for me to network with other like-minded people and showcase my own work for others to be moved and inspired. After all this is the duty of a poet…I have just had my first poetry book published with the Title Scratching the Page and my thanks go to Michael Dobson for producing it and to all those who read it more…
