Analysis of Villanelle for a Different Season

Edgardo S. Tugade 1964 (Manila)

I wear a mask, and also wash my hands.
I do not engage and do not react.
I still look for someone who understands.

I live in a time of infested lands
Because of government’s infernal pact.
I wear a mask and also wash my hands.

I denounce the elected robber bands
But civil service brings in what I lack.
I still look for someone who understands.

The house of life I built on shifting sands
And reaped the tempest and the deluge black.
I wear a mask and also wash my hands.

I try to pray and follow God’s commands
But circumstances dictate how I act.
I still look for someone who understands.

O where do fairies wave their magic wands
And mend the broken crowns of Jill and Jack?
I wear a mask and also wash my hands.
I still look for someone who understands.
