Analysis of Fortunate Removal

Charles Edward York 1966 (Saigon, Vietnam)

In the wilderness the path is uncertain
And danger remains hidden
Until the light appears
Illuminating trouble
Before I step.
How vulnerable I am
When the local fauna is hungry
And I am smaller in silhouette,
Making me more alluring
For the beast's next meal.

What I long for is always out of reach
And comfort zones
Feel safe with boundaries
Till they disappear.
Things I treasure
In disguise can be worthless.
The prize wrapped in ambition
Charms me before it strikes
And I bleed what is precious
Shivering before my demise.

A well timed rescue appears as late,
And misfortune misread
When my handle is lost
Grieving for what I miss,
Thinking it's gone.
Grace reaches for me,
Taking me away abruptly
From certain defeat knowing
I never would have left on my own
And gained more without removal.
