Analysis of Something To Do

                              Something To Do

If you're a mom, you know it's true,
There always seems to be something to do;
Our kids think we're only -- the answer "NO,"
They think we wait around, for them to ask to go,
To the mall, to a friends', or maybe a show;
Just so we can point out -- "your room is not just so!"

They forget the laundry, sweeping, dishes, and mopping,
Dusting, cooking, change the baby, then go shopping;
They need some cookies for the bake sale...today,
"Can you do it, Mom -- or else what will my friends say?"
They don't see a maid, chef, baker, seamstress, laundress,
Nurse, or chauffeur -- just Mom -- why all the stress?

Then one day, when you think all is for naught,
They bring you a card, showing they do care -- they're caught;
They have picked up some of what you've said,
It isn't just M.C. Hammer inside of their head;
As they go out on their own, to join the human race crowd,
We let them go, and with tears in our eyes say -- I am so proud;

As the youngest one leaves, and we look around,
The "Something to Do" has been replaced, by the quiet we've found.

About this poem

I wrote this poem one day when my son was young, because he seemed to always need me to do "something" for him.

Rosanne M. Mayes

I started, and continued for many years, to write poems about life in general, just for my own enjoyment of putting the words down on paper. After a lot of poems had stacked up one day, I sat down and read them all. When I finished, I said to myself, "That didn't sound too bad." "I wonder if they could be published." So, I got online and found a publisher, contacted them, and they were interested in seeing what I had. And here I am today, entering a contest! more…
