Analysis of The man in the moon

The world was mine
Up there on your shoulders
I was safe, loved and brave

Other heroes brought their own
But none could
Match your powers

My love for the moon grows
As I search the night skies
To find your smile

This time of year takes me back
To the day your heart stopped
Because mine stopped
a little then too

The journey has been long and tiring
But I am slowly finding the girl I was - owning the world on your shoulders
Safe, loved and brave.

About this poem

This is about my grandad - he was my first male role model as my dad wasn't constant at the time. He would hoist me up on his shoulders and walk everywhere with me. What makes this special is that he passed away when I was three but my only memory of that time was of him and how I felt around him.

Jessica Giger

Daydreaming, earthwalking, cloud-dwelling girl. Seen and been through enough pain to write about forever, but loves to write about love. Love for her friends, her son, her family and her very grave affection for a special boy who is just out of her reach but always in her world. While working through her day filled with chores and real grown up things, her heart and mind is captivated by words. Filled with an insane compulsion, she has to write them down so they can escape from the prison which is her mind. Poetry also releases her from her own cage. more…
